1970s W & A Gilbey whisky DAMAGED LABEL
W&A Gilbey isn’t a single whisky style but a historic blending house whose whiskies share a recognisable profile: light, Speyside‑leaning, orchard‑fruit driven, and built for elegance rather than power. The company was a major force in Scotch’s development, owning and shaping distilleries like Glen Spey, Strathmill, and Knockando .
W&A Gilbey was founded in 1857 by Walter and Alfred Gilbey as a wine and spirits merchant before expanding into gin and Scotch whisky blending. It later became part of International Distillers & Vintners (IDV) and was eventually absorbed into Diageo .
Their legacy lives on through the distilleries they developed and blends like Catto’s, still marketed today .
Typical Whisky Style (Based on Gilbey’s Distillery Portfolio)
Because Gilbey’s whiskies were blends built around their own distilleries, the house style reflects the character of Glen Spey, Strathmill, and Knockando:
Aroma - Soft orchard fruits: apple, pear, white peach. Light malt sweetness. Gentle floral notes (hawthorn, meadow flowers)Subtle vanilla and cereal tones
Palate - Clean, light-bodied Speyside character. Honeyed malt, barley sugar, and fresh apple. Hints of almond, hay, and soft spice. Very smooth, designed for easy drinking
Finish - Medium length. Malty, slightly nutty, with lingering orchard fruit. A touch of vanilla or gentle oak
