1980 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

Douro, Portugal — Vintage Port (bottled 1982)

Appearance - Deep garnet‑mahogany core with a brick‑red rim, showing classic tertiary development.

Nose - Elegant, mature, and beautifully layered. Dried figs, dates, and black cherry compote. Walnut, roasted almond, and old‑wood polish. Cocoa powder, molasses, and a faint tobacco leaf lift. Subtle rose petal and orange oil top notes. Aromatically complex in the classic Smith Woodhouse style: dark‑fruited, nutty, slightly drier than Graham’s, more structured than Dow’s.

Palate - Silky, savoury‑sweet, and wonderfully resolved. Stewed plum, sultana, and blackberry liqueur. Toffee, dark chocolate, and hazelnut brittle. A firm pepper‑spice line from the house style. Gentle cedar, leather, and dried herb complexity. The tannins are now melted and velvety, acidity still bright enough to keep the wine lifted. Medium‑sweet rather than opulent.

Finish - Long, warming, and nut‑spiced. Cocoa, walnut skin, clove, and a touch of espresso. A lingering dried‑fruit richness with a savoury, old‑tawny echo
