Let’s delve into the world of Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey, specifically the one with the John Locke & Co label from the 1990s.

Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey: A Historic Journey
The Old Kilbeggan Distillery, nestled in the village of Kilbeggan, has a storied past. Originally known as the Brusna Distillery, it later became Locke’s Distillery. Built in 1757, it utilized materials from an old Cistercian monastery and holds the distinction of being the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

Production at Locke’s distillery ceased in 1954, but in 1988, the assets of the old Locke’s distillery were acquired by Cooley Distillery. Initially, Cooley used the space to store aging casks. On July 17, 1992, they tapped the first mature cask of Locke’s whiskey, produced by Cooley, with the granddaughter of the last John Locke present.

Cooley resumed whiskey production at Kilbeggan on March 19, 2007, exactly 53 years after production had stopped at the distillery. Cooley Distillery, founded in 1987 by John Teeling, operates two pot stills and three column stills, with a preference for double distillation (unlike the more common triple distillation seen in most Irish whiskey production).

The core range from Cooley includes the Kilbeggan blends and both peated (Connemara) and unpeated (Tyrconnell) single malts.

Tasting Notes for Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey
Appearance: The whiskey presents a rich, yellow-gold color, which stands out among mass-market Irish whiskeys.
Nose: Smooth and inviting, it exudes grainy, cereal sweetness, toffee, vanilla, and nuttiness.
Flavor: Expect a honeyed, malty sweetness with a touch of pepper and woody notes. The finish is light and short, leaving a dry, woody impression.

Alcohol Content: Kilbeggan is bottled at 40% ABV.

Remember, Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey carries the legacy of centuries, blending tradition and innovation. Sláinte!
