Lagavulin 12 Year Old – 2018 Natural Cask Strength
Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Islay, Scotland
ABV: Cask Strength (~57.8%)
Cask Type: Refill American Oak
Style: Fierce, bright, smoky, coastal — Lagavulin in its purest, most electric form
Appearance - Pale straw — luminous and lean, signalling clean refill‑bourbon maturation.
Nose - The critic describes earthy, peppery peat, hazelnuts, seaweed, and lemon juice — and that’s the backbone. Expanded: Dry, earthy peat smoke, sharp and mineral. Bonfire ash, kiln air, and charcoal dust. Seaweed, salt spray, oyster shell. A bright citrus lift of lemon juice, grapefruit zest, lime oil. Hazelnut, vanilla husk, barley sugar. A faint medicinal thread — antiseptic, iodine, herbal smoke. It’s vivid, clean, and unmistakably Lagavulin.
Palate - Explosive peat smoke, hot and immediate. Bonfire embers, charred driftwood, smoked chilies. Lemon oil, white grapefruit, bitter orange. Brine, kelp, iodine, salted oak. White pepper, chili flake, ginger root. A clean, almost surgical medicinal edge that defines the 12‑year style. The mouthfeel is oily, electric, and intensely alive.
Finish - Medium‑long (as the critic notes), dry, and elemental. Smoked chilies, ash, citrus peel, salt, and a lingering glow of hot peat smoke.
A brilliantly fierce, bright, and uncompromising Lagavulin. The 2018 edition is all about clarity: sharp citrus, roaring peat, coastal salinity, and clean refill‑oak structure. Pure, wild Islay energy.
A razor‑bright cask‑strength Lagavulin bursting with citrus, bonfire smoke, smoked chilies, and coastal salinity. Fierce, clean, and elemental — the 2018 Special Release at its finest.
