The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After convincing some friends to buy a cask of Glenfarclas he expanded his syndicate and in 2004 the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC.

It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler.

Appearance - Crystal‑clear with a faint silvery viscosity; the 50.1% ABV gives it a soft, oily cling.

Nose - Bright, aromatic, and classically juniper‑led. Juniper berries, angelica root, and coriander seed. Lemon peel, orange zest, and a touch of lime leaf. Barrel influence: vanilla, light oak spice, and a hint of sweet cream. Subtle herbal lift: cardamom, white pepper, fresh pine. Clean, crisp, and slightly sweeter‑toned than GN1.2 due to the lower ABV.

Palate - Silky, structured, and botanically expressive. Juniper oil, citrus oils, and gentle pepper heat. Mid‑palate brings vanilla cream, soft caramel, and almond from the second‑fill barrel. Herbal depth: angelica, liquorice root, cardamom, mint leaf. .A rounded, creamy texture that softens the London Dry dryness. Balanced, elegant, and very “SMWS” in its cask‑accented style.

Finish - Long, dry, and gently warming. Juniper resin, oak spice, and citrus peel. A final echo of vanilla and white pepper
